It’s with a heavy heart that I write this: our beloved Pearl has passed away, and because she played such a large part in this blog, I thought it best to alert all of you that you will no longer be seeing photos of her in my future posts.
Pearl lived a good life, she would have been 10 this coming September, which may not seem very old for an indoor cat like her, but she suffered from a heart condition since she was a kitten. Although she was on four different kinds of medication at her passing, she was incredibly healthy considering what she lived with her entire life, and our vet admitted that Pearl ‘beat the odds’. She leaves behind her sister Smokey, who is doing alright, although acting a little more subdued than usual. Even though she was present while Pearl was put to sleep, Smokey seems to be wandering about the house looking for something, no doubt her lifelong companion.
We have some wonderful memories to remember Pearl by. She chose my husband as her favourite shortly after we got her and her sister as kittens, and she showed her affection in some strange ways; one of her favourite things to do was licking the deodorant from my husband’s armpits (which in hindsight, probably didn’t help her health all that much, but it wasn’t an everyday thing). The day we picked them up from the farm they were born on, Pearl had terrible gas, and for the five hour drive we had ahead of us, my husband and I were both shocked that such terrible smells could come from such a cute little ball of fluff.
I wish we had more time with Pearl, but I’m also grateful we still have Smokey in our lives. She will become the sole ‘face’ of ivereadthis for the foreseeable future, which will hopefully keep her spirits up as she mourns the loss of her sister.
Really sorry to hear this. I’m sure she knew how much you loved her.
thank you-I sure hope so!
Anne, I’m so very sorry to hear this sad news. Pearl was a beautiful, photogenic little lady who became quite a celebrity among book bloggers. She often brightened my days. Thinking of you. 🤗
Thanks very much Paula! I appreciate your kind words.
thank you!
Sorry for your loss!
thanks very much
Cats are important.
Oh no. I’m so sorry to hear that she passed. I know how much she meant to you and how much you loved her. Hope Smokey cheers you up.
thanks-Smokey is doing her best! And she seems to be recovering from the loss pretty well herself.
Aw, sorry to hear this, Anne! Take care.
Thanks Lori!
Aww, I’m so sorry about Pearl kitty 😪
*hugs*
thank you!
Aw, my dear, I’m so sorry! It’s not fair that they have such short little lives, but at least she had a great one with people who loved her and cared for her. I hope Smokey bounces back soon – they grieve just as we do, whatever people say. Thinking of you.
Yes I totally believe Smokey is grieving too, but she should be ok in a little while I’m sure of it 🙂
I’m so sorry for your loss, Anne. Thinking of you.
I’m so sorry for your loss! She was a beauty & I always enjoyed seeing her pictures. Take care.
thank you.
I’m sorry for your loss! Pearl looks so beautiful. I hope Smokey also recovers from the shock of loss soon.
Smokey seems to be on the mend too, so that’s good.
I am so sorry! Our fur babies are a part of the family and it so hard to see them move on. My thoughts are with you
Rip😓 I’m so sorry
I’m so sorry for your loss of Pearl. I lost my beloved kitty of 16 years back in May and his sister (and littermate- like your two) has been lost without him, too, like your Smokey. Thinking of you.
yes it seems to be harder on them than us humans realize I think. Thanks for the kind words!
Oh, I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope you guys are doing okay. And Smokey, too. I always feel so sad for the pets who are left… I wish we could explain it to them and have them understand. Anyway, Pearl was a lucky cat with such a good home. Hugs! XO
Their baby pics are adorable!
Aren’t the baby pics lovely? haha I loved looking through them.
Sorry. It’s so hard.
thanks Martie 🙂
Sorry to hear about Pearl : ( Big hugs!!!
Thanks guys 🙂
Sometimes I feel shy when I talk about you all–my blog friends–because I always have to add that adjective “blog” to be clear that I’ve never met any of you. But really, you are sone of my BEST FRIENDS. And now that Pearl has passed away, I feel like I’ve lost a blog pet. You had me both laughing and crying in this post, Anne. Thinking of you, and with love to you and yours.
Aw thanks Melanie, that’s very sweet. I feel the same way actually, I always say ‘blog’ before ‘friends’, but really, I seem to talk to you more often than some of my friends that live fifteen minutes away!
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️😘
Never an easy one, Anne. So much love and so many great memories, though.
I’m so sorry–our fur kids are such a big part of our lives.
very true!
So sorry Anne. We’ve lost a lot of pets over the years, and it never gets easier. Sending love your way 💕
thanks lady!
Sorry to hear of this. Cats are such amazing creatures, aren’t they? Our pussy cat is 18!
Wow-18 is so impressive!
I’m catching up on blog posts so I just read this. I’m so sorry! Having gone through my own loss recently I definitely empathize. Pearl was so cute as a kitten and grew into an absolutely beautiful cat! I know you and Smokey will miss her. Our cats are definitely part of the family. Blessings to you and your family!
yes I thought of you as I was reading this-you will know exactly how I feel!
I’m so sorry to hear this. She was a beautiful cat and I always liked seeing her model with the books! They become members of our family and it’s so hard to say good-bye.
very true!
Oh, my. I am so sorry to hear about Pearl, that she had been coping with illness for awhile and that it became too much for her. As soon as I saw the title of your post, I started to tear up and was just hoping that she was announcing her retirement from public book-duty. Poor Pearl, poor you, poor husband, poor Smokey. Such a hard, hard time. Perhaps adopting a greater responsibility for book-related duties will help distract Smokey from the loss (although I don’t believe anything can hasten/lessen it when one is very attached). The pictures are beautiful.
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, Pearl was very dear to us, but Smokey seems to be doing surprisingly well on her own now! Perhaps the extra book duties are lifting her spirits, as you suggested 🙂
