Did you enjoy the book Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple? If the answer is ‘yes’, you will most certainly enjoy How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior. And if you hated Bernadette? You’re going to want to pass on this book, because it’s VERY similar. Prior’s book is an easy, light read that made me feel warm and fuzzy all over. Our protagonist Veronica is a crabby old woman that will make you laugh, but I also admired her penchant for expensive handbags. The penguins are super cute too.

When I first saw this blog post, I thought you were reviewing one of your children’s books. The cover looks very picture book! I will say, I’m not surprised that if you have enough money you can crash a scientific expedition and have a baby penguin. *sigh*
I hope you continue talking about how a book would work in a book club (I know you’ve been leading book clubs!) because I’m definitely a pick-the-plot-apart book clubber, whereas I’ve been in clubs where folks decide they “like” the book or “don’t relate to the book” and then want to talk about work.
Oh no! Talking about a work at a book club? That should be banned. That’s good feedback re: book clubs, I’ll keep that in mind!
My mom and I have our own book club together, just the two of us, that we call Biscuit Book Club. We’ve found that the last couple of books we’ve read have not been conducive to discussion, which is a bummer. Sometimes, it means we end up talking about the pandemic instead, and that is never good.
Nope, pandemic talk should also be outlawed at book club 🙂 When I post my review of Migrations next week, that would be a good book club pick for you guys

We have this one at my library and I was attracted to the cover. Plus I enjoyed both the book and movie of Bernadette! So I will read it eventually.
I was getting a major feeling of deja vu there, then realised I already watched this on youtube! Not sure this one is for me, but I can see how it would work for feel-good fans. 😀

Like Melanie, i was sure this was a children’s book. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with cute covers. And it’s convenient that you have your own personal penguin model for the shoot too.

Is this book appropriate for a 9th grader?
yes absolutely! They may not find it relatable perse, but definitely a fun read.
