2018 Holiday Advent Calendar Unveiling: December 3
Today’s chocolate is delicious…short story, not so much.
Although this book is described as a novel in the press release, I think of it as a book of short stories, as each chapter can easily stand on its own. Taken together, the chapters are not cohesive enough to create one story, but I don’t believe that is a negative thing, each section is…
There’s alot going on in this video; I’m wearing a bathrobe, I reveal my blog branded mug, and my husband interrupts my recording. But the most important thing of note is that this is the first short story that is holiday themed-yay! And I really enjoyed it. There are major spoiler alerts in this review,…
I started reading this book in Canada, and I finished reading it in Germany. This doesn’t really have anything to do with the way I enjoyed it, I just wanted to brag about the fact that I’m travelling to fun places right now. Instead of taking pictures of books with my cats, I’m including photos…
My fixation on Alberta writers comes with good reason. I’m on the board for the Writers’ Guild of Alberta yo! Their mission is to connect, encourage, inspire, promote and support Alberta writers and their writing, so it would be a down right travesty if I didn’t feature them on one of my radio segments this…
Because I posted a picture book review yesterday, I thought I would double up on SSAC2018 videos today instead. So, below are Day 18 and 19 of my short story advent calendar project. About this time of month I start to question why I take on a project this time consuming in the busiest month…
The swelling is slowly abating in my mouth, plus, I enjoyed today’s story. Things are looking up for me!

Yep, I thought merging mythology with historical fiction was an interesting concept, but it wasn’t for me, either. And I really did not care for the footnotes. I tried to lighten it up by comprising the following Haiku Review:
If Odysseus
Played an elaborate game
Of telephone, right
This one sounds like it wouldn’t do much for me either. I feel woefully ignorant of Greek myths but not terribly interested in reading about them, really. The chocolate sounds yummy!
If you have to add footnotes so people understand your story, you’re doing it wrong. Even someone who doesn’t know the original story should get something from it. If someone’s doing a retelling of a story, they should be adding something to it so that people who are familiar with the original get something more out of it (cool extra layers), but people who don’t know the original still can read the new version.
agreed! I feel bad about saying that, but I hate footnotes in general…
Oh well, at least the chocolate looks yummy! I find all these myths a total bore too, and totally agree footnotes shouldn’t be necessary!
so glad I’m not the only one!
I’d be another reader uninterested in this story. Also not a big fan of mythology. I just could never get into it.
The chocolate sounds yummy!!
