  1. Ha, you’re not the last person to have heard of it – I hadn’t either! Sounds a bit too twee for me, but I can see the attraction of a cosy read in these troubled times!

    1. Indeed FF! And that’s a reminder for me, I must try to use the word ‘twee’ in a sentence, I just love how it sounds haha

  2. What are your thoughts on people self-publishing and then the big-name presses swooping in to buy the book and make bank? Part of me wonders if we shouldn’t ditch agents and just do self-publishing and contests and let the readers decide. Then, the more successful books get optioned by the publishers. I’m also a big fan of print-on-demand model of publishing to prevent massive environmental waste.

Regarding your review, I agree that the book sounds way too easy. The author developed a formula—buy the portrait, find the person, get their life story—and I think that would wear on me. I think if I were having a terrible time with life, this cuteness might just be the ticket, though.

    1. Honestly, I don’t mind the idea of publishers swooping in and making bank, because I would never have read it if it was self-published, in all honesty. There’s just soo much crap out there that I don’t bother with self-publishing. I want to read something that I know a few other people have read, recommended, and think it was good. And I don’t want to read something that hasn’t been professionally edited either. It’s my bias and I’m sticking to it! haha
And if the author didn’t want to sell to Simon and Schuster he didn’t have to. He could have continued to self publish on his own happily, but he obviously thought this was the right route for him.

  3. When I first glimpsed this book, I assumed it was about Golden BC, and, after I realised it wasn’t, my interest fell away sharply. heheh (Have there been books set in Golden, I wonder?) But from what you’ve said, I’m not sure it was a match for my taste either way, the U.S. or B.C. nevermind.

    1. Yes, I just said the same thing to Karissa, I was hoping it was BC too and was sorely disappointed it wasn’t! But yah, I don’t think this would be to your tastes Marcie, I was surprised at my reaction to it, I thought I would really love it, but as Laila pointed out, it’s just a bit too simplistic.

  4. This book has been so popular, seemingly out of nowhere! I initially thought it was Canadian (there is a town called Golden here in BC). People seem to really like it and you’re probably right that it’s because it’s a slice of something more peaceful in the midst of all the chaos of our lives right now.

  5. I also hadn’t heard of this book until a month or two ago! So weird how word of mouth books like that take hold sometimes. I wondered if it would be a bit simplistic.

    1. That’s a good word for it Laila. It’s similar to how I felt about the Japanese Cozy Fiction too – just a bit too simplistic for my tastes
