Video Book Review: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Just wanted to give a big shout out to all the book bloggers out there that urged me to give this one a go; you know who you are! Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is by far the oldest book I’ve read in awhile (it was published in 1938), but I loved it, so I’ve recorded a booktube review of it below. You’ll see it gets a big ‘thumbs up from me, and a special ‘hurrah’ for borrowing the classics from your local library. And yes, Mrs. Danvers is an especially creepy character, one I’ll be thinking about for awhile. And another yes-fans of Ruth Ware’s latest book will really enjoy Rebecca-lots of parallels!
My review of Rebecca includes lots of images and a couple of comparisons to the movie done by Alfred Hitchcock: https://grabthelapels.com/2016/07/11/rebecca/
I think the creepiest part in the whole novel is after the narrator comes down stairs in a new dress because Maxim shouted at her about her costume. She stands there with Maxim, they show no affection toward one another, and as everyone leaves and says what a wonderful time they had, she keeps saying, “I’m so glad.” She says it so many times, it’s like she’s trying to convince herself.
Well the whole book is so friggin creepy, and Ms Danvers! the fact that the word skull keeps being used to describe her face freaked me out
I really want to read this but my local library doesn’t have a copy! I’m not sure I want to buy it new but I should look harder for a used copy.
You shouldn’t have much trouble finding a used copy, and you could always buy a used copy off amazon/ebay. I am shocked your library doesn’t have a copy though!
I was surprised too. We don’t have a used book store locally but I’m always scouring the thrift shops and library sales for used books so I’m bound to find one eventually.
