    1. I’m so glad you liked this. I have loved all her novels. I was also struck by how I felt at the end of the book. I think I might have described it as deeply satisfied, but “unexpected calmness” is good too! And it was great to get that inside look at life as a nun – totally agree!

  1. One of my favourite parts of this novel is the gentle humour. Even though there is a lot of realistic darkness in the story, the little quips and observations, the friendly chatter between characters, takes out the sting of all that.

One reason I liked it so much is that the nun character really made me rethink my cynicism towards Christianity. She was just so lovely, and her devotion to others was so inspiring, it’s so calming to think that there are people like that in the world.

  2. I’ve read a few stories about nuns, including a novel my classmate in my MFA program was working on about a nun who was in love with a fellow nun. I also saw the play called Grand Concourse about a nun in a soup kitchen in New York City who loses her faith. That one’s quite cool, too.
