Halloween Video Review: The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson

I’m getting into the festive Halloween spirit here by reviewing a ‘spooky’ book by Craig Davidson: The Saturday Night Ghost Club. Notice the extra effort I’ve put into this video-I included Halloween decorations on my bookshelf! That’s about as crafty as I get unfortunately, but nonetheless here it is.

I should have mentioned that this book has been shortlisted for the Rogers Writers Trust Fiction Prize for 2018-the winner will be announced November 7, so we will see how this one fares against other heavyweights such as Esi Edugyan’s Washington Black. As you can tell by my review above, I was really impressed with this novel, so I’ve got my fingers crossed Davidson ekes across the finish line with it.

Side note to other booktubers-what is with my focus on this video? Is there some special setting on my camera that I’m missing? I hate that every time I move the camera it re-focuses, but if I don’t keep the lense on autofocus everything is blurry. Thoughts or suggestions welcome!

  3. My husband knows some stuff about cameras, so I’ll ask him why it tries to focus every time you move just a littlest bit. It’s so fun that a spooky book is considered literary and that it’s up for a prize. I may have mentioned this to you before, but I’ve been to some writing conferences where they now have panels about literary genre novels. People are really into them, so literary genre novels are making a big comeback. There are also literary genre short stories. So you get authors like Kelly Link who write fantasy or speculative fiction, but she’s broken into a mainstream market.

    1. Ohhh I had no idea this was a thing! Glad to hear it though, the literary genre needs to be spiced up a bit.

  5. Happy Halloween! I’m even more excited to read this book now. I doubt it will happen before Nov. 7, but that’s okay. I still haven’t read Cataract City – have you?

    1. Yes indeed! I forgot what I think about it, but I seem to recall having to defend it at a giller light event some years ago…
